The bathroom is often the most neglected room of the house. When you’re going through renovations, it’s easy to overlook a bathroom, as it’s the room you probably spend the least amount of time in. Unless it’s remarkable, a bathroom’s appearance is often overlooked. However, there are a few small upgrades you can do to your bathroom to elevate its appearance and make it a more inviting room in your home.
Update the mirror
This is an incredibly easy upgrade that can make a huge difference. Think about trying a different shape for your mirror. For example, if you have a large rectangular mirror above the sink right now, think about replacing it with an oval mirror. Or, simply put a frame around the edges of the mirror, which will bring up the appearance of your bathroom considerably.
Add a backsplash
A backsplash may seem like an incredibly time-intensive project, but it really isn’t. As this article states, you can purchase peel-and-stick backsplash stickers that have the look and feel of regular bathroom tiles, but won’t require any grouting and careful tile cutting. This is a project that will take you about an hour, and will give your entire bathroom a completely different feel.
Wallpaper is another one of those projects that seems like it would take days to complete. However, if you opt to use a peel-and-stick wallpaper, much like with the backsplash, you’ll have a completely new bathroom within a matter of an hour or so, without the nuisance of using paste to achieve the look you want. This is also a great option if you’re living in a rental, because it can be removed when you move out, without damaging the wall or paint behind it.
Updating the countertops
This is probably one of the more time intensive projects, but it’s also the one that will probably make the most impact in your bathroom. You can replace your simple porcelain or vinyl countertops with granite or marble, and your bathroom will go from drab to elegant. This sort of project probably isn’t one you’ll want to do yourself, but it’s a much smaller project than trying to update the countertops in your kitchen, and you’ll find yourself with the bathroom of your dreams with gleaming countertops.
Swap out your faucets
With even the most basic of plumbing knowledge, this is an easy day project. You can go to your local hardware or home improvement store, and pick out faucets. This is a perfect opportunity to pick out a faucet and showerhead that actually match, so your bathroom has a more put together feel. In most cases, swapping out your faucets is as simple as unscrewing the existing one, and screwing the new one into its place. If you’re worried about doing it correctly, you can always ask for the advice or help of a professional before doing it yourself.
Add hardware to your cabinets
If the cabinets and drawers in your bathroom don’t have any knobs or handles, consider picking out some elegant, matching knobs at the hardware store. These are incredibly easy to install yourself, all you’ll need is a drill and a screwdriver. Or if you already have handles on all of your cabinets, but you don’t like them or they’re starting to look kind of dingy, change them with something you like better.
Try some shelving
One of the most common reasons people think their bathrooms look messy is because of clutter. If you don’t have enough room for all of your bathroom necessities and they’re starting to spill out onto the floor or countertop, it may be a good idea to think about installing some shelves. You can purchase an over the toilet shelving unit that matches the color of the wall that will look natural, and give you enough space to make your bathroom look considerably less cluttered. You can even take it one step further by purchasing small baskets or canvas totes to line the shelves with, and to place all of your toiletries and linens inside. This way, you can’t actually see any of your products or clutter, and everything is neatly tucked away in plain sight.
